Cot Castle is a medieval motte located in Lanarkshire, Scotland, dating to the Norman period of the twelfth century. The monument consists of an earthen mound typical of early Norman fortifications in Scotland, representing the castle-building practices of the Anglo-Norman lords who established feudal authority in the lowlands during this era. Such mottes served as administrative and defensive centres for their lords, though few structures survive above ground at Cot Castle today beyond the characteristic raised earthwork. The site is situated within the landscape of south-central Scotland where numerous similar motte-and-bailey fortifications were constructed following the Norman settlement patterns of the medieval period.
