Overview

History & significance

Coventry city walls is a complex of medieval fortifications surrounding Coventry in Warwickshire, England. The walls were constructed primarily during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with the earliest sections dating from the late thirteenth century, and represent one of the most extensive and well-preserved examples of medieval civic defence in England. The circuit originally measured approximately two miles and incorporated at least twelve gates and numerous towers, constructed in stone and brick with substantial earthwork foundations. Although much of the circuit has been destroyed or substantially reduced since the sixteenth century, surviving sections remain visible within the modern city landscape and continue to demonstrate the considerable investment that the prosperous medieval city made in its urban fortification and defence.
