Overview

History & significance

Dalton medieval village is a deserted settlement of medieval origin located in Lancashire, approximately 620 metres east-north-east of Dalton Hall. The site comprises the remains of a nucleated village settlement together with associated ridge-and-furrow earthworks that represent parts of the open field agricultural system that would have supported the community. The settlement appears to have been established during the medieval period and subsequently abandoned, leaving behind surviving earthwork traces that are characteristic of deserted medieval villages in northern England. The ridge-and-furrow cultivation patterns visible across the landscape provide evidence of the intensive arable farming practices that characterised medieval agrarian economy in this region.
