Overview

History & significance

Danebury Hill camp is an Iron Age hillfort located near Nether Wallop in Hampshire, England. The site comprises a substantial single bank and ditch enclosure crowning the hilltop, enclosing an area of approximately 5.3 hectares, and dates to the Middle Iron Age, with occupation evidence spanning from around the 6th century BC through the 1st century BC. The fort has yielded significant archaeological finds including pottery, metalwork, and structural remains that document settlement patterns and economic activity across several centuries of the Iron Age. Excavations conducted during the 1960s and 1980s revealed evidence of internal timber buildings, storage pits, and craft working areas, making Danebury one of the most extensively studied hillforts in southern England and an important source for understanding Iron Age settlement hierarchy and social organisation.
