Overview

History & significance

Denbigh Town Walls is a medieval fortification enclosing the town of Denbigh in Denbighshire, Wales, constructed principally in the late thirteenth century following the English conquest of North Wales. The defensive circuit comprises substantial stone walls with towers and gates designed to protect the newly established English borough and castle garrison. The walls originally formed a roughly rectangular perimeter and retain significant stretches of their original masonry, including sections of ashlar stonework and the remains of defensive towers that would have commanded approaches to the town. The fortification represents an important example of Edwardian military town planning and Welsh medieval defensive architecture, preserving evidence of late medieval modifications and the strategic importance of Denbigh as an administrative centre during the period of English rule in Wales.
