Milton Abbas is a planned village in Dorset, England, established in the late eighteenth century as part of a controversial estate reorganisation by the first Earl of Dorchester. The original medieval settlement of Milton Abbas was deliberately depopulated and relocated between 1786 and 1790 to create space for landscaped parkland surrounding Milton Abbey, a decision that displaced many inhabitants from their ancestral homes. The new village was laid out along a single broad street lined with uniform cottages of distinctive architectural character, reflecting the aesthetic principles of Georgian estate planning. The design represents an important example of eighteenth-century lordly paternalism and the tension between aristocratic improvement and the rights of rural communities, making it historically significant as both an architectural achievement and a record of social displacement during the period of landscape gardening.
