Dundee and Newtyle Railway embankment north of Baldragon is a section of railway infrastructure surviving from the early nineteenth-century expansion of transport links in eastern Scotland. The embankment runs across Angus, constructed to carry the railway on a level course across the undulating landscape. Built upon bedrock of the Arbuthnott-Garvock Group—Pragian sandstones interspersed with conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone—the embankment represents the engineering response required to maintain consistent gradient over the variable geology of the Mearns.
The Dundee and Newtyle Railway was among Scotland's earliest railways and demonstrates the technological ambition of early industrial-era transport planning. The embankment's survival in the landscape near Baldragon preserves physical evidence of the cutting and moving of substantial quantities of earth and stone, techniques fundamental to nineteenth-century railway construction. The solid foundations provided by the underlying Pragian strata supported the substantial earthworks required.
