Overview

History & significance

Durford Abbey is a Premonstratensian monastery founded in the 1160s in the parish of Petersfield, West Sussex. The abbey was established as a daughter house of Dryburgh Abbey in Scotland and flourished as a centre of religious life until its dissolution in 1536 during Henry VIII's suppression of the monasteries. Substantial ruins survive today, including sections of the cloister, chapter house, and other monastic buildings, which testify to the scale and architectural ambition of this mediaeval foundation. The site remains an important archaeological monument documenting Premonstratensian religious practice and monastic economy in the High and Late Medieval periods.
