History & significance

Tregarrick Tor is a complex of prehistoric monuments located on high ground in Cornwall, comprising an earlier prehistoric hillfort, an adjacent round cairn with an incorporated shelter structure, and a tor cairn. The hillfort represents occupation and defensive provision during the earlier prehistoric period, whilst the round cairn with its integral shelter element indicates subsequent funerary and possibly domestic use of the site during the later prehistoric era. The tor cairn, characteristic of Cornish upland archaeology, further attests to the sustained ritual and territorial significance of this elevated location across successive prehistoric phases. Together, these monuments demonstrate the long-term importance of Tregarrick Tor as a focal point for settlement, burial practice, and ceremonial activity from the earlier through to the later prehistoric periods.
