History & significance

Earthwork 300m south west of Fair Rosamund's Well, Blenheim Park is a scheduled ancient monument of uncertain date and function located within the grounds of Blenheim Palace near Woodstock in Oxfordshire. The earthwork consists of a linear or irregular bank and ditch system whose archaeological character suggests origins in the medieval or early post-medieval period, though definitive dating has not been firmly established. The monument lies within a landscape of considerable historical complexity, as Blenheim Park itself underwent significant redesign during the eighteenth century under the direction of Capability Brown and others, which may have modified or preserved earlier field systems and boundaries. The earthwork remains of archaeological interest as evidence of the pre-eighteenth-century land use and settlement patterns within what is now the parkland estate.
