Eggesford Castle is a motte-and-bailey castle situated in Devon, approximately 640 metres north-east of Eggesford House. The monument dates to the Norman period, likely erected in the eleventh or twelfth century as part of the network of fortifications established following the Norman Conquest. The castle comprises a substantial earthwork mound with an associated bailey, representing the typical defensive architecture of early Norman settlement in the region. Although the structure survives only as an earthwork monument with no standing masonry, it remains an important archaeological record of Norman baronial authority in Devon during the medieval period.
