The site, protected as a scheduled monument by the Historic Environment Division (reference 4423), occupies land underlain by Lough Neagh Clays Group deposits formed during the Oligocene period, which combine clay and lignite to create the distinctive waterlogged terrain characteristic of this region.
Early Christian monasteries of this type typically functioned as centres of religious learning, manuscript production and pastoral care from the fifth century onwards. The round tower, a distinctive feature of Irish monastic sites, would have served defensive and practical purposes, providing refuge and storage during times of threat.
