Overview

History & significance

Eynsford Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress located in the village of Eynsford in the Darent Valley, Kent, dating to the late eleventh century. The castle consists of a substantial circular motte surrounded by a ditch, with the remains of a stone keep constructed during the twelfth century, representing one of Kent's earliest stone fortifications. The site was strategically positioned to control the River Darent crossing and remained an important baronial residence throughout the medieval period before falling into decline. The surviving earthworks and fragmentary masonry remain significant evidence of early Norman military architecture in south-eastern England.
