Overview

History & significance

Falkland Palace is a Renaissance royal residence located in the village of Falkland in Fife, Scotland, built primarily during the sixteenth century as a hunting lodge and country seat of the Scottish monarchy. The palace was substantially developed under James IV and James V, with the south range constructed around 1501-1513 and the east range completed by 1537, representing one of Scotland's finest examples of early Renaissance architecture. The surviving structures display characteristic features of the period including corbelled turrets, decorative stonework, and mullioned windows, whilst the courtyard is enclosed by impressive stone walls with crenellations. The palace served as a significant royal residence and retains considerable historical importance as evidence of Scottish Renaissance patronage and architectural achievement, though much of the original complex has been lost to time.
