Fasnacloich Crannog is an Iron Age to medieval lakeside settlement situated in Argyllshire, Scotland. This crannog comprises an artificial or modified island platform built within shallow water, a settlement type characteristic of western Scotland's defended homesteads from the Iron Age through the medieval period. The site lies 320 metres south of Fasnacloich, where its inhabitants would have benefited from natural defences afforded by water and the ability to control access across causeways or by boat.
The underlying bedrock consists of Neoproterozoic strata of the Appin Group, comprising graphitic pelite, calcareous pelite, calcsilicate-rock and psammite. These metamorphic rocks form the geological foundation of the surrounding landscape, themselves ancient deposits subjected to intense pressure and heat during the Caledonian mountain-building period. The local geological setting would have provided stone suitable for construction of the crannog's timber and stone structural elements.
The site is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference number SM3962, acknowledging its importance as evidence for domestic life and settlement patterns spanning more than a thousand years. The crannog's survival, preserved in waterlogged conditions that protect organic remains and artefacts, offers potential for understanding the material culture and economic strategies of Iron Age and medieval communities in Argyllshire.
