# Field Wall & Cairns
Field Wall & Cairns is a Bronze Age pre-bog landscape monument located near Strabane in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The site comprises three cairns and an associated field wall, representing the relict remains of agricultural settlement and land management from the Bronze Age period, before blanket peat accumulation transformed the upland terrain. The monument lies at grid reference H5155498905 and is protected by the Historic Environment Division under reference 14082.
The underlying bedrock belongs to the Argyll Group, a Neoproterozoic formation composed of marble and meta-limestone, which has been heavily weathered and overlain by the bogland characteristic of this landscape. The preservation of Bronze Age field systems and cairns within such environments is exceptionally rare, as peat formation typically obscures or destroys surface archaeological features. The field wall and cairns therefore offer valuable evidence of pre-bog land use patterns and the extent of Bronze Age settlement activity across what is now marginal upland terrain.
The monument contributes significantly to understanding how Bronze Age communities exploited and organised the landscape before climatic deterioration and increasing moisture led to extensive peat development.
