Fountains Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132 in the Ripon area of North Yorkshire, England, which became one of the wealthiest and most influential religious houses in medieval Britain. The extensive ruins, set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserve substantial remains of the monastic precinct including the abbey church, cloister ranges, and numerous service buildings that demonstrate the architectural sophistication of twelfth and thirteenth-century Cistercian design. The site is remarkable for its integration of water management infrastructure, including mills, fishponds, and channelled watercourses, which supported both the monastic community and the abbey's extensive agricultural and industrial operations across its landed estates. The adjoining eighteenth-century landscape garden at Studley Royal, laid out by the Aislabie family following the Dissolution, represents a significant phase of post-monastic use and the aesthetic revaluation of the ruins as picturesque monuments.
