Overview

History & significance

Frithelstock Priory is a Benedictine monastery founded in the eleventh century in north Devon. The priory was established as a cell dependent upon Tavistock Abbey and remained relatively modest in scale throughout the medieval period. Surviving remains include the parish church, which retains Norman architectural features, and fragmentary stonework from the monastic buildings, which testify to the priory's reduced circumstances compared to major religious houses. The site was dissolved during the Reformation, with the church subsequently serving the local parish community into the modern era.
