Overview

History & significance

Furness Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1123 as a daughter house of Savigny Abbey in Normandy, located in the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire. The abbey was established under the Savignac order before merging with the Cistercian order in 1147, becoming one of the wealthiest and most influential monasteries in northern England. The surviving monuments include substantial earthworks defining the monastic precinct, a great gatehouse providing entrance to the abbey complex, a south-west gateway, a chapel positioned outside the main gates, and the precinct wall which enclosed the monastic community. These remains date predominantly to the medieval period and represent the physical extent and organisation of a major religious establishment that operated until its dissolution in 1537.
