Garpol Water is a motte-and-bailey castle situated 650 metres south-west of Rosetta in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. This earthwork monument consists of an elevated mound, or motte, accompanied by an adjoining bailey, a defended enclosure typical of Norman and early medieval fortifications constructed across Britain and its borders from the eleventh century onwards. The site lies upon bedrock of the Gala Group, Telychian wacke, which would have presented solid foundations for the defensive structures built above.
The motte-and-bailey design proved particularly effective in frontier regions such as Dumfriesshire during the medieval period, combining a high vantage point for surveillance and defence with a sheltered courtyard space for domestic and military activities. The earthwork's survival in the Garpol Water landscape demonstrates the enduring impression left by medieval fortification practices on the Borders.
