Garpol Water Motte-and-Bailey is a Medieval fortified earthwork situated approximately 650 metres south-west of Rosetta in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The monument consists of the characteristic two-part structure typical of motte-and-bailey castles, comprising a raised mound (motte) with an adjoining fortified courtyard (bailey), representing a common form of Norman and early medieval military architecture in Britain. Such structures were typically constructed from the eleventh century onwards and served as local defensive strongholds and seats of authority for feudal lords.
