Gilkicker Fort is a mid-nineteenth-century coastal defence fort located at Gosport in Hampshire. Constructed between 1861 and 1865 as part of the ambitious programme of fortifications known as the Palmerston Forts, it was designed to protect Portsmouth Harbour and the naval installations within it from potential attack by sea. The fort is a substantial masonry structure built on a pentagonal plan with casemates and gun emplacements positioned to command the approaches to the harbour. Its construction reflects the Victorian strategic response to perceived threats from continental European naval powers, particularly France, during a period of significant military uncertainty in mid-nineteenth-century Britain.
