Glastonbury Abbey is a ruined Benedictine monastery located in the town of Glastonbury in Somerset, founded in the late Saxon period, with documented religious activity at the site from at least the tenth century. The abbey became one of the most significant and wealthy religious establishments in medieval England, acquiring extensive lands and considerable influence by the Norman period. The surviving ruins, primarily dating from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries, include the remains of the Lady Chapel, the presbytery, and portions of the cloister, constructed largely in local stone with architectural features reflecting the Perpendicular Gothic style prevalent in its later phases. The abbey was dissolved during the Reformation in 1539, and its estates subsequently passed to secular hands; the site remains substantially visible today as an archaeological monument, with the fragmentary stone structures occupying considerable ground area within the former monastic precinct.
