Overview

History & significance

Glastonbury Abbey is a ruined Benedictine monastery located in the town of Glastonbury in Somerset, England. Founded in the late Saxon period, the abbey became one of England's most important and wealthy religious houses, with its prominence enhanced by claims connecting the site to early Christian history and Arthurian legend. The surviving ruins, dating principally from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries, include substantial remains of the abbey church, chapter house, and other monastic buildings constructed in the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The monastery was dissolved during the Reformation in 1539, and the site subsequently fell into decay, though the dramatic ruins of the great church nave arcade and crossing remain visually impressive and architecturally significant as evidence of the abbey's former grandeur and resources.
