Glenwhappen Rig is a post-medieval palisaded enclosure situated 1450 metres north-east of Glenbreck in Peeblesshire, in the Scottish Borders. The monument occupies ground underlain by Gala Group wacke bedrock, formed during the Telychian period of the Ordovician. This geological foundation of hard sedimentary rock is typical of the Southern Uplands landscape in which the enclosure was constructed.
Palisaded enclosures of the post-medieval period served practical defensive or stock-management purposes, their wooden stake-built perimeters providing security for settlements or pastoral activities during a time of sustained land use in the Scottish uplands. The upland location of Glenwhappen Rig reflects the pastoral economy that dominated this region, where the moorland landscape supported sheep and cattle farming.
