The site comprises an earthen motte with an associated bailey, typical of Norman fortifications of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, along with remains of a manorial enclosure. The monument represents a significant example of early medieval defensive and administrative architecture, reflecting the settlement pattern and landholding structures of the Norman period in Hertfordshire. The earthwork remains, though reduced by centuries of agricultural use and development, preserve evidence of the castle's original form and its role as both a defensive stronghold and manorial centre.
