Greenwich Hospital (RN College) is a major architectural complex located in Greenwich, London, which served as a naval institution from the eighteenth century onwards. The hospital was established in the late seventeenth century under royal patronage and developed throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a purpose-built establishment for the care and accommodation of retired naval officers and men. The complex comprises a number of substantial buildings arranged around formal courtyards, designed by leading architects including Christopher Wren and subsequent craftsmen, and demonstrates the architectural conventions of institutional design across multiple periods. The site remains significant as a rare surviving example of a dedicated naval welfare establishment and represents a considerable investment in the material care of naval personnel during the period of British naval ascendancy.
