Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall is a Roman fortified frontier constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD, extending approximately 73 miles across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the North Sea. In wall miles 27, 28 and 29 between Chesters and the road to Simonburn in Northumberland, the wall and its associated vallum (ditch and bank system) survive as substantial earthwork remains that exemplify the monument's characteristic two-phase construction and strategic layout. The vallum, a broad linear earthwork lying to the south of the wall itself, served to control access and movement across the frontier zone, and in this section the ditch and flanking mounds remain visible despite post-Roman disturbance. This stretch of the wall represents the central sector of the frontier works, constructed primarily under Hadrian's reign between approximately AD 122 and 138, and demonstrates the sustained Roman military commitment to securing and demarcating Britain's northern boundary.
