Hadrian's Wall is a Roman frontier fortification constructed in the second century AD under the emperor Hadrian, extending across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the North Sea. This section, situated between Chesters fort and the road towards Simonburn in wall miles 27, 28 and 29, preserves substantial remains of both the wall itself and the accompanying vallum earthwork, which collectively formed a sophisticated defensive and administrative system. The wall in this locality retains masonry foundations and coursing typical of Hadrianic construction, whilst the vallum, a parallel ditch and bank system lying to the south, represents the logistical infrastructure designed to control movement and protect supply routes. These monuments testify to Roman military engineering and represent one of the most significant surviving examples of imperial frontier architecture in the British archaeological record.
