Hadrian's Wall is a Roman frontier fortification built in the second century AD across northern Britain under the emperor Hadrian's orders. This section, stretching between St Oswald's Cottages and the North Tyne in wall miles 25, 26 and 27 near Brunton Gate, preserves substantial remains of both the wall itself and its associated vallum, a flat-bottomed ditch system that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side. The monument demonstrates the characteristic engineering of this frontier, with the stone-built wall constructed to a height of approximately three metres originally, while the vallum represents the demarcation of the military zone behind the fortification. This stretch of wall remains archaeologically significant as evidence of Roman military construction and territorial control during the second and third centuries AD.
