History & significance

Hadrian's Wall and vallum between the Fence Burn and the track to Portgate Cottage in wall miles 21 and 22 is a scheduled section of the Roman frontier fortification constructed under the Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD. The wall and its associated vallum, the substantial earthwork ditch that runs parallel to the rear of the wall across much of its length, are preserved in this segment of Northumberland as elements of the frontier system that marked the north-western boundary of the Roman Empire in Britain. This stretch demonstrates the characteristic construction and layout of the wall's central section, where both the military barrier and its logistics infrastructure remain visible as archaeological features in the landscape. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation granted to Hadrian's Wall as a monument of outstanding universal significance to Roman military engineering and frontier management.
