Hadrian's Wall is a Roman frontier fortification built in the early second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian to mark and defend the north-western boundary of the Roman province of Britannia. This section of the Wall and its associated vallum, located in Cumberland at wall miles 51 and 52 near Banks, represents the structural engineering of this defensive system across challenging terrain. The vallum, a wide ditch with flanking earthworks that ran parallel to the Wall on its southern side, served logistical and administrative functions in addition to the Wall's defensive role. At this location between Coombe Crag and Banks Green Cottage, the monuments preserve evidence of Roman military organisation along one of Britain's most significant archaeological landscapes, constructed between approximately AD 122 and AD 128 during the reign of Hadrian.
