Hadrian's Wall and its associated vallum at Banks in Cumberland is a section of the Roman frontier defensive system constructed in the 2nd century AD under the emperor Hadrian. The monument consists of the stone wall itself together with the vallum, a substantial linear earthwork comprising a ditch with flanking berms that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side, forming part of the integrated military infrastructure of the Wall complex. At this location in wall miles 51 and 52, the physical remains extend between the field boundary west of Coombe Crag and the road to Lanercost, preserving evidence of the construction and layout of this frontier monument across approximately two miles of terrain. The site represents a significant section of the approximately 80-mile wall that traversed the width of northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the Tyne, serving as the northwestern frontier of the Roman Empire for much of the Roman occupation of Britain.
