Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall and vallum between the field boundary west of Wall Knowe and Scotland Road is a scheduled monument comprising a section of the frontier fortification built under the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD. This stretch of wall, constructed from stone and measuring approximately seven feet in height with a surrounding ditch system, forms part of the continuous linear defence that extended across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the Tyne estuary. The vallum, a substantial earthwork running parallel to the wall, represents the southern boundary of the military zone and is clearly visible in the landscape along this segment. Stanwix fort, located at wall mile 65 near Carlisle in Cumberland, served as an important auxiliary installation garrisoning mounted cavalry units and controlling this strategically significant sector of the frontier during the Roman occupation of Britain from approximately AD 122 onwards.
