Hadrian's Wall is a Roman defensive frontier constructed under the Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD, extending across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the Tyne. The section between the field boundary west of Wall Knowe and Scotland Road in Cumberland preserves substantial remains of both the Wall itself and its associated vallum, the defensive earthwork running parallel to the southern face of the barrier. Stanwix, situated at wall mile 65, was one of the largest auxiliary forts on the Wall, strategically positioned to control the River Eden crossing and serving as a major administrative and military centre throughout the Roman occupation. The fort and Wall structures in this locality represent critical evidence for understanding Roman military organisation, frontier defence, and the logistical infrastructure of one of the empire's most significant provincial boundaries during the first and second centuries AD.
