Hadrian's Wall is a Roman defensive frontier built in the second century AD under the emperor Hadrian, extending across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the Tyne. At the section between Caw Gap and Caw Burn in wall miles 41 and 42 near the Northumberland frontier, the wall and its associated vallum earthwork remain visible as archaeological monuments demonstrating the scale of Roman military engineering. The vallum, a substantial ditch with flanking banks, ran parallel to the wall's southern side and marked the boundary of the military zone. This section preserves evidence of the wall's construction technique and the landscape management strategy employed by Roman authorities to control movement across the frontier.
