Hadrian's Wall is a Roman frontier barrier constructed in the second century AD under the Emperor Hadrian to mark and defend the northern boundary of the Roman province of Britannia. This section, spanning wall miles 29, 30 and 31 near Carrawburgh in Northumberland, preserves substantial remains of both the wall itself and the vallum, the significant earthwork that runs parallel to the south of the barrier. The vallum, comprising a ditch flanked by substantial banks, served administrative and logistical functions in controlling movement across the frontier zone. The remains in this locality demonstrate the engineering and strategic planning characteristic of Hadrian's Wall's construction, which extended approximately eighty Roman miles across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the River Tyne.
