Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall is a defended frontier of the Roman Empire constructed in the early second century AD under the emperor Hadrian, extending across northern Britain from the Solway Firth to the Tyne estuary. This particular stretch, comprising wall miles 29, 30 and 31 in the vicinity of Carrawburgh and Simonburn in Northumberland, preserves significant remains of both the defensive wall itself and the vallum, the substantial earthwork ditch and mound system that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side. The wall in this sector was built of stone and represents the principal defensive element of the frontier, whilst the vallum served administrative and logistical functions in controlling access across the fortified line. These remains, though variable in preservation, retain archaeological importance for understanding the engineering, placement and operational character of the frontier during the second and subsequent centuries of Roman occupation in Britain.
