Hadrian's Wall and vallum between the track to Portgate Cottage and the field boundary east of milecastle 24 is a scheduled ancient monument comprising stretches of the Roman frontier barrier and its accompanying southern defensive earthwork in Northumberland. Dating to the second century AD, these structures represent the northern frontier of the Roman Empire under the emperor Hadrian, constructed around 122 AD as part of the defensive system spanning seventy-three miles across northern Britain. The wall itself, built of stone in this region, stands alongside the vallum, a substantial V-shaped ditch with flanking banks that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side. This particular stretch preserves evidence of milecastle 24, one of the garrison fortlets regularly positioned along the wall's length, and survives as an important example of Roman military engineering and frontier infrastructure within the broader context of the Hadrianic frontier system.
