History & significance

Hadrian's Wall and vallum in wall mile 7, Scotswood section is a scheduled ancient monument comprising a segment of the frontier defensive system constructed in the 2nd century AD under the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The monument extends from Denton Road to Denton Dene in Northumberland and preserves remains of both the wall itself and the vallum, a substantial linear earthwork consisting of a ditch flanked by two banks that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side. This section of the wall, which originally stood approximately 4.5 metres in height, formed part of the 80-mile stone-built barrier that demarcated the north-western frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain. The survival of structural remains at this location provides significant archaeological evidence for understanding the construction techniques, topographical placement, and defensive capabilities of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
