Hadrian's Wall vallum in wall mile 7 is a section of the defensive earthwork that accompanied the main stone wall across northern Britain, constructed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD. The vallum, a flat-bottomed ditch flanked by substantial banks, served to define and control access to the military zone behind the wall, and this particular stretch at Denton Dene preserves approximately 75 metres of the original earthwork in good condition. The Scotswood section demonstrates the characteristic Roman military engineering of the period, with the vallum running broadly parallel to the wall and forming an integral part of the frontier's infrastructure. This monument contributes to the archaeological significance of Hadrian's Wall as a whole, which represents one of the most substantial surviving monuments of the Roman occupation of Britain.
