Overview

History & significance

Hadrian's Wall and vallum in wall mile 9, Blucher to Dene House is a section of the Roman frontier defensive system constructed in the 2nd century AD under the Emperor Hadrian's reign. This stretch of wall, extending across the rolling terrain of northern Northumberland, comprises the stone-built barrier itself together with the vallum, an substantial earthwork consisting of a ditch flanked by two parallel mounds that ran the length of the frontier to the rear of the wall. The wall and vallum in this mile served both military and administrative functions, controlling movement across the frontier and facilitating the collection of customs duties. This designated section retains considerable archaeological and historical significance as part of one of the Roman Empire's most extensively preserved frontier installations, constructed between approximately 122 and 128 AD.
