Hadrian's Wall vallum is a defensive earthwork forming part of the Hadrianic frontier system constructed in northern Britain during the second century AD. This section of the vallum, situated in wall miles 71 and 72 at Burgh-by-Sands in Cumberland, comprises a substantial ditch flanked by two parallel banks that ran behind the main wall itself, serving to control movement and define the military zone. The earthwork dates to the reign of the Emperor Hadrian in the early second century AD and represents one of the best-preserved examples of Roman frontier engineering in this region. This particular stretch demonstrates the continuation of the vallum system across difficult terrain towards the Solway Firth, where the wall's western terminus approached the coast.
