Hadrian's Wall vallum in this section of wall miles 64 and 65, north of Whiteclosegate and west of Wall Knowe in Cumberland, is a Roman earthwork monument constructed in the second century AD as part of the frontier defence system commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian. The vallum comprises a substantial ditch with flanking banks that ran parallel to the main Wall itself, serving to demarcate and control access to the military zone behind the frontier. This particular section preserves visible traces of the characteristic V-shaped ditch and accompanying ramparts that characterize the vallum along its entire seventy-three-mile length across northern Britain. The monument remains archaeologically significant as evidence of Roman engineering and territorial administration during the occupation of Britain, dating to the period from approximately AD 122 onwards.
