Hadrian's Wall vallum is a defensive earthwork constructed during the second century AD as part of the Roman frontier system in northern Britain. This section, preserved between the dismantled railway west of Kirkandrews Farm and the dismantled railway south east of Burgh by Sands in wall miles 70 and 71, comprises a substantial ditch with flanking mounds characteristic of the vallum's design across the Wall's length. The feature served to control movement and demarcate the military zone behind the Wall itself, representing an important element of the Roman occupation and defence of the province. The earthwork remains visible in the landscape as a notable archaeological monument documenting Roman military engineering of the Hadrianic period.
