History & significance

Hanging Grimston barrow group is a Bronze Age funerary monument comprising three bowl barrows located approximately 600 metres south-west of Thixendale Grange in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The barrows form part of a significant concentration of burial mounds distributed across the chalk downlands of the region, reflecting the funerary practices and settlement patterns of Bronze Age communities in the second millennium BCE. The three mounds survive as earthwork features characteristic of the bowl barrow type, which typically comprise a central burial chamber covered by a circular earthen mound with a surrounding ditch. The site remains of archaeological importance as evidence of prehistoric territorial organization and ritual activity across the Yorkshire Wolds.
