Housesteads fort, section of Wall and vallum between the field boundary west of milecastle 36 and the field boundary west of turret 37a in wall miles 36 and 37, is a segment of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland dating to the second century AD. This section preserves remains of the Roman frontier defensive system, including portions of the stone wall itself and the vallum, the substantial earthwork ditch and banks that ran parallel to the wall on its southern side. The site lies within one of the most extensively preserved stretches of the Wall and forms part of the wider Housesteads fort complex, one of the most thoroughly excavated forts on the frontier. The segment demonstrates the engineering and construction methods employed by the Roman military during the construction and maintenance of Britain's most significant Roman monument.
