History & significance

North Hill Cleave is an Iron Age hilltop enclosure located approximately 400 metres north-east of Outer Narracott Farm in Devon. The monument consists of a univallate defence comprising a single bank and ditch arrangement typical of Iron Age hillforts of the south-western peninsula, dating to the period between roughly the 6th and 1st centuries BC. The enclosure occupies a commanding position on elevated terrain, characteristic of defensive settlements from this period which served functions ranging from settlement and storage to ritual and territorial demarcation. The site remains substantially preserved in the present landscape, contributing to the archaeological record of Iron Age settlement patterns in Devon.
