Kilknock old burial ground is a wedge tomb situated near Omagh in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. This Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument consists of a rectangular stone-built chamber, typical of the wedge tomb tradition which flourished across Ireland from around 3500 to 2000 BC. The structure is oriented south-west to north-east, aligned to the winter sunset, a common feature of these funerary monuments. The tomb was constructed on bedrock of the Kilskeery Group, comprising sandstone, mudstone, siltstone and conglomerate, which would have provided readily available stone for the chamber walls and roofing.
Wedge tombs represent a distinctive class of Irish megalithic architecture, characterised by their tapering design with the entrance positioned at the broader, higher end. Kilknock would have served as a communal burial place for the local Neolithic population, marking both a practical necessity for the disposal of the dead and a focal point for ritual and social identity within the community.
