Kinbane salmon fishery is a cottage and ancillary structures dating to the eighteenth or nineteenth century, situated in Moyle in County Antrim. The site sits on bedrock of Palaeogene extrusive rocks, part of the ancient mafic lavas and tuffs that underlie much of the Antrim plateau. This volcanic geology, exposed along the dramatic coastal cliffs in this area, would have been familiar to the people who built and operated the fishery.
The fishery comprises a cottage with associated features necessary to the processing and management of salmon caught from the waters below. Such coastal salmon fisheries were significant enterprises in northern Irish waters during the early modern and industrial periods, exploiting the seasonal runs of fish that moved through the narrow waters between Ireland and Scotland.
The site is now protected by the Historic Environment Division as a record of eighteenth and nineteenth-century fishing practice and domestic life. The remains, recorded at grid reference D087864 3752, survive as evidence of the working landscape that characterised this coast before industrial and economic changes transformed the character of such fisheries.
