Overview

History & significance

Kisimul Castle is a medieval fortress located on an islet in Castlebay, Barra, in the Outer Hebrides. The castle was established in the 11th century and served as the stronghold of Clan MacNeil, one of the principal island families who dominated the southern Hebrides. The structure comprises a curtain wall enclosing domestic ranges and a central keep, representing a characteristic design of western Scottish island fortifications adapted to their remote maritime setting. Following a long period of decline, the castle was restored in the mid-twentieth century and remains one of the most visually distinctive medieval fortifications in the Hebridean archipelago.
