Overview

History & significance

Kiwi Chalk Figure is a twentieth-century geoglyph located on the chalk downland above Bulford Camp near Salisbury in Wiltshire. The figure was created by soldiers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the First World War, cut into the hillside as a regimental emblem and mark of their presence in the landscape. The kiwi bird, the national symbol of New Zealand, was outlined in chalk and measured approximately 430 feet in length, making it one of the most substantial chalk figures of its period. The site represents a distinctive form of military heritage and cultural expression from the First World War era, though the chalk figure has required periodic restoration and maintenance to remain visible on the modern landscape.
