The church occupies ground underlain by Grampian Group bedrock, a sequence of psammite and semipelite rocks formed during the Neoproterozoic period. These metamorphic rocks, which form part of the ancient basement geology of the Scottish Highlands, would have been well-weathered and stable by the medieval period when the church was constructed.
