Knowe of Burrian is a broch situated on the Orkney island of Rousay, dating to the Iron Age. The monument consists of a circular stone tower characteristic of the broch type, which represents a distinctive form of fortified domestic architecture found principally in northern Scotland during the period from approximately the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. Like other brochs, the structure would have provided both residential accommodation and defensive capability to its inhabitants, exploiting the drystone masonry techniques typical of Orkney's Iron Age builders. The site remains an important archaeological resource for understanding settlement patterns and social organisation in the Northern Isles during the later prehistoric period.
