Lauder Barns is a post-medieval palisaded enclosure situated 550 metres south-south-west of Lauder in Berwickshire, Scottish Borders. The monument consists of a defensive or stock-management structure constructed from a wooden palisade, typical of the period following the medieval era when such enclosed compounds served both domestic and agricultural purposes in the Scottish lowlands. The site's strategic position reflects practical considerations of settlement and land use in the region.
The enclosure is founded upon bedrock of the Reston Group, an Early Devonian formation of interbedded conglomerate and sandstone which underlies much of Berwickshire. This geology would have influenced both the construction of the palisade and the character of the surrounding landscape available for grazing and cultivation. The natural drainage and soil development above this solid geology would have made the location suitable for pastoral activity.
The site is protected as a scheduled monument under Historic Environment Scotland's record SM3805, recognising its significance as evidence of post-medieval settlement and land organisation in the Scottish Borders.
