Overview

History & significance

Leicester Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in the late twelfth century by Robert de Beaumont, the second Earl of Leicester. The abbey church and adjoining claustral buildings occupied a substantial site within the medieval town, serving as one of the principal religious houses in the East Midlands until its dissolution in 1538. Following the Dissolution, the abbey precinct was converted to secular use, and by the seventeenth century a substantial mansion was erected within the former monastic grounds, surrounded by ornamental gardens that made use of the surviving medieval fabric. The remains visible today include fragmentary stone structures from both the medieval abbey period and the later mansion, testament to the site's continuous occupation and reuse across several centuries.
